about

The first time I really REALLY paid a lot of attention to the wind when I decided to take up skydiving a fair few years ago. Suddenly the weather in general and in particular the wind became very important.

I was in Florida beginning a course to learn how to skydive. I’ll never forget the first time I went up in the plane there.

What happens when the plane goes up is the pilot flies to the correct ‘spot’ and then brings the engine right down so the plane slows to give everyone a chance to exit at the right place.

Suddenly, after all the noise of the aircraft engine, everything was quiet. Then the door was opened and in an instant, it’s all about the wind and the sky. The sound of the wind was incredible and I couldn't hear anything else. Then half in and half out of the door, terrified and waiting to jump, all I could feel was the wind, and up there in the sky it's ferocious.

I looked out to see this enormous expanse of sky. I felt so small and realised the wind is completely in charge up there and I was just an insignifican, lucky visitor.
